our family has grown by four little feet.

March 17, 2017 by Sarah 15 Comments

little feet3Our family has been quite busy, as we’ve been adjusting to a big life change. Three weeks ago, we welcomed two children from foster care into our home. It’s been a whirlwind, but we are so glad they are finally here!

Many of you know that our family started the foster to adopt process back in October 2014. We did the training, took all of the classes, filled out piles of paperwork and then the waiting began. Weeks of waiting turned into months of waiting. Months of waiting turned into years of waiting. There were many moments where we were starting to feel hopeless. Wondering if it was ever going to happen.

Back in September, we received a call about a sibling set, little girl {age 5} and little boy {age 6}. Our family was chosen and it was the first “yes” we had gotten in this whole process. We couldn’t believe it! With setbacks in the court system, the children ended up not being moved and once again it was out of our hands. Our hearts were broken.

Fast forward to 3 weeks ago. We received another call about the same sibling set and our social worker asked us, “are you still interested?” Again, no hesitation. Our hearts were all in back in September and they still were. The call came on a Tuesday, we met the kids for first time that Friday and brought them home on Saturday. It was fast. Crazy fast. Even though we had spent months preparing for this and spent years waiting, nothing could have prepared us for the changes that were about to happen in our home.

These have been some of the hardest days we’ve ever experienced. Chaos, heartbreak, frustration and just feeling completely exhausted. We know God has called us to love these kids, it’s just taking everything out of us. Going from 2 to 4 kids overnight is a lot. A lot. We are all figuring this out together and we know it’s going to be a long journey for all of us. As the days go by, we are seeing glimmers of hope and healing. We are changing their lives and at the same time, they are changing ours.

Friends, my new recipe posts will be a little slow for awhile. Thank you for understanding. I promise to get back in the kitchen soon, creating recipes for all of you. Right now, I’m taking time to adjust to our new normal of being a family of 6.

Sarah, I recently discovered your site and it has been a Godsend. I’m allergic to many of the same things as your family, and having so many amazing recipes that I can try has been incredible! (No rush on new ones, I’m like a kid in a candy store when I go through your archived recipes!)

I will be praying for your family and thank you so much for welcoming God’s precious little ones to your home. May God go before you and give you His strength, grace, and wisdom!

I can only imagine how overwhelming it must be – for everyone including the new additions. Lots of people (myself included) believe they have the heart to do something like this, but your family was brave enough to go through with it. It’ll be worth it, I’m sure. Take your time and be with your family. Your loyal readers will stick with you. You’ve given us lots of recipes to work with and drool over in the meantime!

    Hi Sarah,
I am so excited for you and your family! I’m praying for each member as you all adjust to, “this is normal now”. Adoption ,especially where there are attachment challenges, can be difficult and exhausting work at times. But it’s also an opportunity for God-glorifying heart work, sanctification, healing, and so much joy!
My family has been impacted both by adoption and short term hosting , and I wouldn’t trade the relationships built nor the perspective gained for the world!
May the Lord Jesus bless you as you seek to love as He loved, and may the six of you truly become family.????
(Btw,I found your site almost two years ago, right after being diagnosed with multiple food allergies. I was so encouraged to realize all the normal and yummy things that are still possible wheat, dairy+ free:)
    Thank you!)

    Dear Sarah,
God has called you to a great work and he will equip you. My husband and I foster children also and it is one of the most rewarding and heartbreaking journeys. Many blessings and I look forward to hearing more about what God is doing in the lives of your family.
Here is a blog that has encouraged me!

Chills! You two are such a wonderful chance for these kids and I have no doubt you’ll find your groove with wrangling 4 instead of 2. I am over the moon for you and so happy that these little ones have found such loving parents and siblings to be with.
